The program for the house was created around the owner's large family, including five children.
The floor plan was designed to be flexible enough to host large groups of people in the summer months while also providing separate living and entertaining areas for the various age groups sharing the spaces. Located on a four and a half mile long island, the lower portion of the site was considered vulnerable to storm tides requiring the the main living level to be elevated approximately ten feet.
